Rarieda Constituency lies to the south of Siaya County along the shores of Lake Victoria in what was known as the Kavirondo Gulf. The constituency was created in 1988, in a split from the greater Bondo Constituency and has been represented by the Kenyan freedom fighter and one of the Kapenguria six (6), Ramogi Achieng Oneko among others.

The members of parliament for Rarieda since its curving out from Bondo, are: Bob Francis Jalang’o of Kanu (1988), Achieng Oneko of Ford Kenya (1992), George Odeny Ngure of NDP (1997), Raphael Tuju of NARC (2002), Nicholas Gumbo of ODM who served for two (2) terms (2007 and 2013), and the current Member of Parliament, Dr. Otiende Amollo, P.M of ODM (2017).

The roles and responsibilities of legislative leaders may seem to be uniform, but each usually finds themselves in unique circumstances. The predisposition of the individual often dictates their particular contribution in the dispensation of their leadership.

Each of the past constituency leaders in Rarieda, have had a fair chance to make a lasting legacy and their efforts are well crafted in history’s memory plate. Some did so well, so we perceive, while others are revered and detested at the same time depending on the selected focus group.

These feedbacks are important indicators for informing decisions regarding critics unleashed on current leaders and choice of future leadership. We need to be sincere in our evaluation approach and methodology lest we diminish the sacrifice made by each leader in the full strength of their potential and means.

Rarieda Professionals Trust (RPT) singles out in its objective, the duty to act as watch dog and advice on best governance and leadership models. In our initial fulfillment of this duty, our view is to give each of our past and current leaders a chance to defend their legacy.

While there may be a lot of variance in the assessment of current leadership, while it still serves, we believe that with a balanced approach to our critic, we stand a greater chance to achieve more with the “living than the dead.” What I mean is that, our critic has a chance to find space for implementation in the current dispensation for the sake of shared progress for all people of Rarieda.

Referring to past leadership as dead here is only parabolic, but in reality, the “dead” do speak. We seek to dig into the history records and harvest the gems of key leadership and socioeconomic development aspirations that the past leaders laid out for Rarieda. From these treasures, we anticipate the remodeling of past quality ambitions in the vein of the aspirations of our time, for a synergistic progress for all of us.

Our conclusion is that every past leader in Rarieda left an unforgettable mark and with this approach, we stand a chance to bring the best building bricks from their gone clocks and install the same in their appropriate place, in reconstructing a common prosperous future shared by all for posterity.
